Draft to-do list --WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 14:44, 22 August 2024 (UTC) Oronsay, Ipigott, Rosiestep, Lajmmoore, CT55555, Victuallers, Cielquiparle, SusunW, Chocmilk03, Penny Richards, Silver seren, PamD, Curbon7, MSGJ and all WIR helpers: Here's a rough draft of the to-do list. - @WomenArtistUpdates, I'll do Writers. I LOVE the tip, @Rosiestep. I hadn't known about those lists before. Oronsay (talk) 18:42, 22 August 2024 (UTC)
- Glad I mentioned it, Oronsay. Added the cat to the tip, as it's applicable, too for pen names. --Rosiestep (talk) 22:36, 22 August 2024 (UTC)
- Great addition, @Rosiestep! While going through the writers' redlists and removing the blue links, I found one writer to add to each list, making them more discoverable, so it's been useful already. Oronsay (talk) 22:43, 22 August 2024 (UTC)

- @WomenArtistUpdates & @MSGJ For #316, I would like to add WikiProject Women writers under the side heading Add to article talk pages, in addition to WikiProject Women and WikiProject Women's History. Similarly, it would be good to know how to add WikiProject Women artists for the Art+Feminism event each year. I have spent some time trying to work out how to make the addition using the new template system, but failed.--Oronsay (talk) 23:22, 22 August 2024 (UTC)
- Oronsay and MSGJ, I went to Science Fiction and Fantasy and copied the code from there in 316. I think I've got it right. Just a little widget in the header of the target page, not the template. --WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 01:23, 23 August 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks so much, @WomenArtistUpdates. I thought it would be something like that, tried various combinations but didn't get it right. Now to remember for next time! Oronsay (talk) 03:18, 23 August 2024 (UTC)
- Oh Oronsay, I can never remember from one month to the next, just a vague recollection that we have solved that problem before. Also, I think the templates are set and we would be tinkering with the meetup page to add elements. Still learning though :) That said, I sure could do a lot of set up in the 1/2 hour I had available to me yesterday morning when I remembered that the to-do list was overdue. I am a convert to the templates. --WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 18:59, 23 August 2024 (UTC)

I have used the writers logo from last year. Is that OK with everyone? The Ten Year Anniversary of WikiProject Women writers is in the announcements section. Look OK? Two pages need reviewing, Women writers and Islands A - H. They both look good to me, but I drafted the skeletons. Finally we are looking for a mass-mailer emeritus to send out September once everything is OK'd. Megalibrarygirl, Rosiestep, Innisfree987, or Victuallers would one of you be able to do that? Annual
[edit]- Writers (with WP:WPWW est. 30 Aug 2014)
Translation contest 2024 July, August, September
[edit]Geofocus: Islands A - H
[edit]Islands A, B & C was suggested for May on the WIR Talk page, but held over due to our annual collaboration on CEE Women. If we go ahead with all the above events, it makes five, plus our two year-long ones. Is this too many?--Oronsay (talk) 20:17, 27 April 2024 (UTC)
- Have we done islands before or do redlists etc. need to be created? Is there an existing list of islands? Sorry, I missed the original suggestion and cant find it on the talk page now, probably been archived. --WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 20:09, 9 May 2024 (UTC)
- This is still on the suggestion list, but as of the 13th, no responses on content creation. Anyone want to own this? --WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 15:40, 13 May 2024 (UTC)
- I suggested "islands" but I don't think we've ever done it before. It was just a passing idea so no worries if it doesn't gain traction. --Rosiestep (talk) 03:36, 15 May 2024 (UTC)
- Looking through our Wikidata Redlists, the following exist: A, B & C: American Samoa, Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Bermuda, Cape Verde, Cook Islands, Cuba and Cyprus. It was suggested that the big island I live on (Australia) should not be included, but perhaps women from islands (Kangaroo Island, Thursday Island, Tasmania and so on) could be added under the appropriate letter – no redlists exist for these. Ditto, for Shetland Islands and very many others. For D, E & F: Dominica, Dominican Republic, East Timor, Faroe Islands, Fiji, French Polynesia. For G, H & I: Greenland, Grenada, Guam, Haiti, Hong Kong, Iceland. For J, K & L: Jamaica, Japan, Kiribati seem to be the only ones. M, N & O: Madagascar, Maldives, Malta, Isle of Man, Marshall Islands, Mauritius, Mayotte, Federal States of Micronesia, Montserrat, Nauru, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Niue, Northern Cyprus, Northern Mariana Islands. For P, Q & R: Palau, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Réunion, Rodrigues. S, T & U: Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Samoa, São Tomé and Príncipe, Seychelles, Singapore, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos Islands, Tuvalu. V, U, W, X, Y & Z: Vanuatu – so we may need to make it S–Z. There are also many islands to be found in the following crowd-sourced lists prepared for the 2017 World Contest: Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia, Europe and Oceania. I also thought of Hawaii, for which there is a Wikidata list for Notable Women of Hawaii (dictionary). We could also make it A–F; G–L; M–R and S–Z, if preferred. - @Oronsay @PamD@WomenArtistUpdates@RosiestepHow about splitting Islands into three and doing it Sept/Oct/Nov? Those months seem to more sparse with ideas (for now). Somehting like A-H, I-P, then Q-Z? Lajmmoore (talk) 16:32, 21 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Lajmmoore, Oronsay, PamD, and WomenArtistUpdates: - Good idea. If we find that it's a hit, we could always repeat it next year split into 4, or 6 groupings. Likewise, we could do something similar (split by alphabet) with countries ... in 2025? --Rosiestep (talk) 15:24, 22 May 2024 (UTC)

Suggestion - Archaeologists (and perhaps Engineers)
[edit]Tentatively suggesting an archaeology focus for October? Archaeology because we were recently reminded by @Joe Roe: that Wikiproject Archaeology/Women in Archaeology Taskforce is very close to completing some of its goals & we (I) wondered whether we might use October to run an event to support the taskforce's objective. October is relevant as 17 October is International Archaeology Day. The tasks left are discussed here, and include
What do other people think? Of course, articles on women in archaeology outside these lists are incredibly welcome too! Lajmmoore (talk) 19:35, 26 July 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for bringing this here Lucy. It would be great to have a follow up to the last archaeology events in 2016 and 2018. Honestly, I'm not sure how much potential there is left in the crowd-sourced redlist, but there are 5000+ on the wikidata list. Or I don't know if WiR has ever loosened its scope enough to do a destubathon? That'd be cool too. – Joe (talk) 19:44, 26 July 2024 (UTC)
- Commonly, in October, Women in Red facilitates its annual STEM Women event in association with Ada Lovelace Day (second Tuesday of October). So Archaeologists would certainly be part of that... but perhaps this year, it could be a special focus? --Rosiestep (talk) 21:41, 26 July 2024 (UTC)
- Sounds good to me. Are the WP:WikiProject Classical Greece and Rome folks in the loop on this? And WP:WikiProject Women's Classical Committee? The latter has always been supportive when I posted about new archaeologist/classics scholar biographies in the past. Penny Richards (talk) 00:29, 29 July 2024 (UTC)
- Hello from the WP:WikiProject Women's Classical Committee (which Lajmmoore is also part of!) - this sounds great and we've agreed to give our October editing session (date TBC but usually around the 20th-25th of the month) an archaeology redlist/stub focus to tie in with this! Eritha (talk) 13:30, 16 August 2024 (UTC)

- I agree archaeologists deserve to be covered but as a result of increased interest in engineers (see WiR's talk page), I suggest we give separate focus to them too. Both could be introduced as specific items of interest in connection with our traditional October coverage of women in STEM. Personally, to avoid confusion and emphasize focus, I would prefer them to be listed as separate events.--Ipigott (talk) 15:26, 10 September 2024 (UTC)

Get to 20
[edit]According to my projections of the increasing numbers of women's biographies, the number of women's biographies should be hitting 20% of all biographies by the end of the year. I wondered if it would perhaps be worth doing an end-of-year edit-a-thon to help us nudge it over the line. Unlike the usual themed characters of our monthly edit-a-thons, this one could be more of a free-for-all to encourage as much creation as possible. Just an idea. --Grnrchst (talk) 08:14, 17 July 2024 (UTC)

[edit]Revolutionary women
[edit]Hey all. For quite a while now I've been working on articles about revolutionary women (i.e. women who either participated in revolutions or were involved in revolutionary movements/organisations). Most of my submissions have been to other themed events, but I was thinking it might be fun to do a specific edit-a-thon focused on revolutionary women. I can try putting together a red list for it, perhaps we could do it some time next year? --Grnrchst (talk) 14:39, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
Interwiki edit-a-thon
[edit]I was just fiddling around with the number of links redlist, as I noticed it hadn't updated in over a year, and managed to get it back to working order. It got me thinking whether we should have an edit-a-thon focused specifically on creating articles with a high number of interwiki links; the redlist includes articles with 7 or more interwiki links. This could be a nice way to focus on the higher importance (for lack of a better term) articles that other language wikis have recognised as worthy of articles. --Grnrchst (talk) 09:46, 8 September 2024 (UTC)
- Support! as I think it's an interesting perspective. --Rosiestep (talk) 19:10, 8 September 2024 (UTC)

Checklist for updates of virtual meetups
[edit]This section is purely administrative. It is not about the ongoing discussions of topics.
WiR generally has a variety of monthly, quarterly and annual events. WiR also sends out an “invitation” to its registered participants notifying them of those events. This is an effort to list tasks associated with the administrative tasks of updating and adding pages. We will be maintaining this list to assist with Quality Assurance. This is a working document and should be maintained to reflect current bast practices. WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 16:52, 18 February 2021 (UTC)
As of March 2024 we are working with a new set of cascading templates. Because the template speak to each other the preview of the template might not be as expected. For example 302 might look like 304. Additionally some pages won't preview correctly unless the editor purges the page to update the cache.
The interrelated templates allow us to make changes and pages once, without updating new and past events throughout the WiR ecosystem. This will ultimately reduce mistakes, bad directs, and misinformation. The coders involved are watching these pages to ensure they work correctly. March 2024 is the first iteration. If direction are not clear it is the drafter's fault - not the coders, so please be gentle.
This is a working document and should be maintained to reflect current bast practices. --WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 21:43, 6 March 2024 (UTC)

- Step 1 - Add details of the event to Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/events (see instructions at Template:WikiProject Women in Red/doc#Technical info). This will automatically update the various lists of events, and also allows editors to tag the article talk pages with
{{WikiProject Women in Red}}

For example, start at Participants copy through the bottom of the page (XYZ as an example). update month and event number in the pasted sections. - Then add the "body" of the page (welcome, redlists, purpose) using a similar editathon as a starting point.
- Step 3 Create a new category for meetup articles (e.g. at Category:WikiProject Women in Red meetup 317 articles). Add the template {{WIR category}} to the new category.
- Step 4 Create the invite (e.g. Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Outreach/2024#March 2024) using the previous month's invite as a go-by.
- Step 5 Invite and receive feedback from a sufficient number of WiR enthusiasts that the event page and invite are okay. Mark reviewed items with

- @MSGJ: This looks good to me, however is there anyway to have the "Past events" in reverse chronological order so it would start with most recent past and end with 2015? --WomenArtistUpdates (talk) 21:36, 2 April 2024 (UTC)
- MSGJ - (1) Agree with WomenArtistUpdates regarding recommendation about the "Past events" in reverse chronological order so it would start with most recent past. (2) I'm curious regarding "Recently completed" events; why not just put the March events into the "Past events"? --Rosiestep (talk) 21:49, 2 April 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, recently completed can be merged into past events. The reason I did this is that they are kept separate on Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Events so I was following that. I guess at the start of April, editors are still working on March events so a more prominent link is helpful? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 09:02, 3 April 2024 (UTC)

One biography a week
[edit]Not many of us are able to write a new article every day but most of us should be in a position to create one biography a week. How about making this a subsection of #1day1woman, starting in January 2024? Each participant could have a separate slot in which their new biographies could be listed. There would be no need for biographies to meet specific criteria such as minimum length but all new articles should meet normal standards of acceptance. We could provide virtual awards for those who manage to continue for three months (with at least 13 articles), six months (26 articles), nine months (39 articles) and for the whole of 2024 (52 articles). Participants should of course be able to create and list more than one new biography a week if they wish but everyone should try to create at least one per week. If contributors are able to keep this up, I believe it could have a significant effect on how we progress. There should be no need to participate from the beginning of January. Participants could join whenever they want and simply calculate periods of three months from the date of their first addition. Is this workable as it is or does anyone have other suggestions?--Ipigott (talk) 10:43, 9 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Ipigott: I really like this idea, especially the awards for different lengths of time (it's a lot easier to commit for three months and then keep going!). I'd be keen to commit to #1week1woman :) Chocmilk03 (talk) 20:57, 10 December 2023 (UTC)
- This idea is really attractive to me. Doing 1 article a day is just not workable for my schedule, especially since my free time to edit is largely just on the weekends. But managing one women's biography a week seems way more doable. I wholeheartedly support this proposal. SilverserenC 21:05, 10 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Ipigott: Just jumping in to say: I like this idea too. I haven't managed to carve out much time for article creation in a long while, and I'd really like to get back to that in 2024. One biography a week sounds doable (at least for a portion of the year!). Alanna the Brave (talk) 20:22, 19 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Ipigott: Hey there! Completely agree, this is a fantastic idea. A biography a day is daunting and for the majority of us unrealistic, but an article a week I would be more than happy to sign up for. ChairMex (talk) 19:59, 10 April 2024 (UTC)
- #1week1woman? Should it be a separate event? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 13:59, 11 February 2024 (UTC)
- I still think this would be better set up as a separate event, so they can be tracked separetely. Happy to set this up e.g. on 305 if people think that is a good idea. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 10:33, 4 April 2024 (UTC)
- @MSGJ: I think we should set this up! Count me in. ChairMex (talk) 19:59, 10 April 2024 (UTC)
- ChairMex: It ran successfully from January to March as part of #1day1woman and is continuing from April to June here. It would be disruptive to make it a separate event at this stage. I hope you will join in as soon as possible. Please let me know if you run into any difficulties.--Ipigott (talk) 05:44, 11 April 2024 (UTC)

Are we in touch with what events the world wants WiR to facilitate?
[edit]In a recent discussion on my talkpage with Ipigott regarding WiR events, I asked, ... I'm also curious if we aren't in touch with what events the world wants us to facilitate...
I suggested 3 quarterly campaigns for later this year: social influencers (Apr, May, June), sports (Jul, Aug, Sep), politics (Oct, Nov, Dec). There were also other salient points made in that section of my talkpage. Ian suggested that I shift the proposal regarding the 3 quarterly campaigns here. So, What do you think? --Rosiestep (talk) 19:46, 8 February 2024 (UTC)
- I think these three-month opportunities could serve as an important additional attraction. Contributors will have time to become familiar with the background and will be able to write about women who are gaining significance in the modern world. Many of our younger contributors should find the topics more in line with their interests than those requiring an interest in history. While I don't often write BLPs, I look forward, for example, to writing about notable TikTokers and YouTubers. It will be interesting to see if there is wider support for this venture.--Ipigott (talk) 09:29, 10 February 2024 (UTC)
New editor retention
[edit]As a general follow-up to a chat at my user talkpage with Ipigott about mentoring new contributors and ideas related to incentives to improve participation, I don't really have specifics to offer, but instead a few general perspectives to perhaps consider.
My perspective is based on how as an attorney, I became familiar with what is known as 'client-centered lawyering' (brief example overview: Client Centered Lawyering: An Avenue for Change, Aqdas Khudadad, October 12, 2022, University of Cincinnati Legal Clinic), and later in my M.Ed program, 'student-centered teaching' (there are a variety of monikers for this practice) (brief example overview: Student-Centered Learning: In Principle and in Practice (Christa Green and Christopher Harrington, July 20, 2020, Michigan Virtual Learning Research Institute). Ipigott, not to put you on the spot too much, but you seem to take what could be considered an 'editor-centered mentoring' approach, and I think this is a solid foundation upon which further efforts could be developed.
There is substantial research literature available on these subjects that may be helpful to review and adapt for new editor support and retention purposes. I use the term "retention" intentionally because of its use in the education field as a metric, so this may be a helpful keyword.
On a more specific note, maybe it would be helpful for new editors to have access to reflections from editors with more experience, about what it was like to be a new editor, what they wish they knew/what was a surprise to learn, and strategies that helped for coping with challenges. For this Wikiproject, perhaps we could tailor reflections to also include a focus related to writing about women. Beccaynr (talk) 19:24, 19 February 2024 (UTC)
- @Beccaynr: I am a relatively new editor and I still feel uneasy in this space, I would really appreciate the 'editor-centered mentoring' approach you talk about!. ChairMex (talk) 19:59, 10 April 2024 (UTC)
